THE STORY BEHIND THE STORYTELLER.
London — Art Director — 6+ years of multidisciplinary experience
She is Teniola Akinola.
As a British-Nigerian Art Director, I specialise in visual storytelling, creating culturally resonant narratives across still and moving image. My work is informed by contemporary culture, fashion trends, and evolving visual tides.
I've always used narrative as a way of making sense of the world around me. What began as an artistic curiosity for visual expression evolved into an approach centred on design, composition and narrative thinking.
Transformation is the lens through which I explore identity, viewing it as a continual process of discovery. My work exists between reality and imagination, and visual language is the tool I use to express the tension between who we are and who we have the potential to become.
Drawing on experience across fashion editorial, visual merchandising, social-first content, and brand campaigns, I combine cultural insight and visual sensibility to create meaningful narratives that connect brands with their audiences. Much of my work reimagines identity through theatrical lighting, sculptural silhouettes, textural contrast, and evocative colour palettes.
For me, art direction is more than the arrangement of images; it's the orchestration of meaning. Realising these visions is a collaborative process, one that involves partnering with creatives across disciplines to bring ideas from concept through to execution. The result is work that feels authentic, distinctive, and true to the identities of the brands, artists, and communities it represents.
Beyond art direction, I continue to explore creativity through sewing garments and experimenting with materials. This practice keeps me grounded in the craft, form and materiality that first inspired my interest in fashion.
